Tuscaloosa SAIL staff spearhead drive to assist area consumers
The Tuscaloosa office of the State of Alabama Independent Living (SAIL) program recently held a personal hygiene/household items drive to benefit SAIL consumers in the Tuscaloosa area.
The month-long effort was spearheaded by Independent Living Specialist Misty Smith, Nurse Case Manager Denise
Brazeal, Case Manager Ashley Foster, Case Manager Nancy Harrison, and SAIL administrative assistant Rosie Tinker.
The office held its first such drive two years ago, when it collected non-perishable food and canned goods to provide to consumers on fixed incomes. It held a similar drive last year, collecting some 25 grocery bags of food, said Smith.
In response to requests from consumers, the group decided to collect household and personal hygiene items for this year’s drive.
This year’s haul included enough paper towels, laundry detergent, wash cloths, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, and toothpaste to fill 41 bags. The items were donated by Tuscaloosa ADRS staff and local churches. Area grocery stores provided reusable bags to hold the items.
Smith estimated that each of the bags was worth $40, for a total value of $1,640. Forty of the bags were distributed to SAIL consumers, and one was given to a local family that lost their home in a fire.
