Several CRS staff members recently assisted with a two-week summer camp for children with disabilities held at Alabama State University.

Camp GIFTED (giving individuals freedom to express diversity) is an annual fine arts camp for students interested in drama. Each year, the camp culminates with an inspiring live show that features students acting and singing on stage.

Behind the scenes, dedicated CRS staff work to make the live show possible by monitoring the students’ health care needs.

The emotional closing of the show featured the campers singing "God Made Me Who I Am."

“I’m really proud to be a part of this program,” said Kim Lewis, ADRS care coordination program specialist. “The kids work so hard to put on the show. We work hard for the kids to allow them to put on the show.”

However, this year CRS’s talents were also featured on stage. Miracle Woods, CRS youth consultant, was featured as a lead in the program when the show’s director needed to fill a vacant part.

For those who missed the performance, the message of this year’s program was to be careful when labeling people. Words matter, and while some labels are good, others can be hurtful.

In addition to Lewis and Woods, other CRS staff who volunteered for this year’s camp were Lisa Bachant, Tawana Casey, Jennifer Lavoie, and Laura Upchurch. CRS clients featured in the show were Raven Anderson, Jeremy Carter, Nathan Colin, Edward Flowers, and Leonardo Lugo.
